Goldwater Scholarship

Application year:

Sophomore, Junior

The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program was created in 1986 to encourage outstanding students to pursue careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering and to foster excellence in these fields. Nominees for Goldwater Scholarships must include in their nomination materials a statement of interest in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering, detailing how their academic program and their overall educational plans will prepare them for their chosen career goal. Most Goldwater Scholars plan to pursue PhD’s in their chosen field. Students who intend to pursue an MD/PhD are eligible only if they plan a research career rather than a career as a medical doctor in a private practice. A strong candidate will have had the opportunity to participate in research, either at his or her institution, in local industry, or in a national research facility. Students who have not participated in formal research can demonstrate intellectual curiosity through independent investigation of a theory or issue related to their fields of interest. Abilities and potential are also shown through meeting significant responsibilities, involvement in science-related organizations, and accomplishments outside the classroom.

Signature of Program:

Support for undergraduate students intending to enter careers in natural science, mathematics or engineering research; not intended for clinical career goals.

Amount of Award:

$7500 annually towards undergraduate degree

Open to US Citizens and Permanent Residents who are in the upper quarter of the class. 3.8 GPA. Requires nomination by the University of Mississippi.
